Nomex® (also called meta-aramid felt) is a high-temperature felt that protects against extreme heat.
Nomex® works as a flame-resistant material using three mechanisms. First, the fibers absorb incoming heat,
keeping it away from the wearer. Next, the fibers swell and thicken with heat to fill gaps in the apparel.
Finally, the thickening and absorption of heat increase the fabric's insulating properties, offering further protection.
This fire-resistant material is widely used in the production of protective apparel, coated industrial fabrics, insulation,
aerospace fabrics, hot-gas filter bags, high-temperature hoses, and the interior design of commercial transport aircraft.
While Nomex® withstands most acids, it does incur some strength loss after lengthy exposure to hydrochloric,
nitric, and sulfuric acids.
